A SERIES of UNFORTUNATE EVENTS ..........

Being the kind and generous friend that I am, I said that I would water my friend's garden while she was away in Yorkshire. Opposite her house is a large old house called The Old Barn in front of which is a very large public lay by. I parked there and was the only car.
We had the key to the garage, opened it up, left it open, lay down our phones and car keys, unlocked the back door and got on with the job in hand. I went to the bottom of the garden with the hose while Mr Home started watering the pots with a watering can. After a while, he called out to me that he thought we had a problem !!!

The draft from the garage door being open had slammed the back door shut, the bolt at the bottom of the back door had slid down and we were now locked in her back garden ..... no phones as we had left them in the garage !!!

Luckily, it was a hot day and I could see that next doors patio door was open. I climbed on a bench and, after many ' halloo's ' that got louder and louder when nobody seemed to hear, a man came out. His English was limited but, he got the gist and came and released us. He did seem to take a very long time though ..... he only had to come from next door !!! ..... and, he said it was the wrong time to water the garden ..... bloody cheek !!!

A couple of days later, the same procedure occurred ..... I took the hose down to the end of the garden while Mr Home proceeded to dead head a very large bush rose at the top of the garden. When I arrived at the rose, Mr. Home was watering the pots out the front. I started to water the rose but must have pierced the hose with the thorns on the rose and started getting wet from three sprays of water where the hose was punctured !!!

So, my act of kindness not only got us locked out but it cost us £50 for a new hose .....

AND

when we returned to the car, the b******ds who live in The Old Barn had blocked me in in the lay by. We were the only three cars in a lay by that's at least 500 metres !!!  With my wonderful driving skills, I got out ..... they obviously don't like anyone parking there !!!!

Remind me not to do anyone anymore favours !!!

  3. I'm discovering the same rude neighbors here and inconsiderate friends that I have known for years. It's #45 disease I fear. Sadly It does make one ponder doing any good deeds anymore. : (

  4. Haha, always look at the bright side, Jackie, because that was really unfortunate, but in the beginning I thought that somebody would snatch your belongings while you were in the back garden. So: it could have been even worse!
And I believe that you have also very high temperatures , in Berlin yesterday 36° in the shadow!! So a little douche might be welcomed...

  5. You are a good egg Jackie. You just can't go away and leave all your plants to die especially the pots. And hubby helped too. I'd give you a lovely gift for your trouble.

    1. Hi Donna,
Thanks so much for commenting when I have been a hopeless commenter lately ..... I know that I say it all the time but I will try to be better ...,. You are such a good blogging friend . I wish I was a near neighbour of yours as I know that your gift would be something that I would love ! XXXX

  6. I find it hard to say "no" to our neighbors (who are lovely) when they need assistance because they are always good about caring for our odds and ends outside when we travel. I cannot handle the dogs (2) for neighbors on the left, but I do care for nextdoor on the right's kitty (and am doing so now) but admit one time I locked his key in his house, had to call him to find out where there was an extra hidden one. Also, a few times the cat has left hair balls on his bedspread so have dragged it home and washed/dried it - the bedspread, not the cat!!!!!

Love the photos you illustrated this post with Jackie.
Hope things get easier for you, hugs Mary

P.S. I always leave the neighbor's key in the lock on the outside now - and take my phone into his house just in case I need to call someone about something!

    1. Hi Mary,
My friend was very grateful as our weather has been hot, hot, hot since June ..... can you believe it ?!!!!!
It was just a series of events which is typical for us !!
You talking about cats, I looked after my friends cat once that was pregnant. She said she had left boxes around and, if she was going to give birth, it would be in the box ..... WRONG ..... she gave birth on her bed and I had to take the duvet etc to the laundrette ( as the duvet wouldn’t fit in her washing machine )..... goodness knows what people thought when they saw blood, placenta and other catty fluids on the bed clothes !!!!! 😂 XXXX

  7. I wouldn't be me, and I hope you'll forgive me, if I didn't point out that it wasn't you doing a friend a favour that caused you mishap and expense. I am sure you'll work out for yourself what I am saying. As to the grumpy neighbour: He is right there is a time to water plants. Anyway, he did let you out, didn't he. Gratitude!

Anyway, not that this is a competition: But try (on top of the garden, doddle) to look after your friend's (and next door neighbour's) four guinea pigs too. They had their own little run during the day in which they could nibble at all the grass. Alas, one - on point of putting them back into the hutch in the evening - made a dash for it. Honestly, Jacqueline, if anyone had predicted I'd squeeze underneath a thorny hedge with barely any space, in pursuit of one of those truly useless "pets" - I'd still have done it. And, yes, I did get it back - before my and the neighbourhood's cats cottoned on.

I suppose you are right, doing favours does come with risks attached.

    1. Hi Ursula and many thanks for popping into my blog and for taking the time to comment.
I agree with you entirely .... this is just typical of us and completely our fault !!!
I also know that the evening is the best time to water the garden but, we were going out at about 4.00 pm so we had to water at about 1.30 pm which is much better than not watering at all !!!
My friend looked after our cats once and one got run over in her care ..... it always seems to happen, doesn’t it ? XXXX

  10. The best laid plans . . .
What good hearts you are . . .
Neighborly advice about when not to water . . .
What was his rule . . . could you see his garden . . .
Bet your friends never ask him to help out . . .
I have good intentions when I offer to help, like you did,
but there does always seem like some kind of glitch happens during my good deed . . .
    Key doesn’t work in lock . . .
Can’t find the assigned kennel for the dog . . .
The central air seems to be cooling WARM . . .
    And other incidents . . .
    Can’t believe the rose thorns wer3 that prickly . . .
    I would have withstood the cost too . . . even though . . .
it was probably an old worn out hose to puncture so easily.
