St Mary's church is just behind our house ..... the 15th century Parish church is in the centre of the conservation area and is surrounded by listed buildings but is the only grade 1 building in the area. The church is mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086. The present church was built between 1418 and 1448 and was probably rebuilt after it had fallen into neglect after the Black Death. It is a fine example of Gothic architecture and the beautiful, almost Dickensian location and the church's wonderful acoustics helped to make the choir { of which our son was a choir boy from the age of seven and who went on to a career in music } congregation, booming organ and brass ensemble the most atmospheric building for many an event.
I took this video last evening ..... the peeling of the bells is a regular occurrence .... from bell practise to weddings ..... and it is lovely to hear when sitting in our garden.

Those are good bells. We are overshadowed by a Victorian church with really bad bells, played by equally bad bell-ringers. I do not mind the Bath Abbey bells. They are fine even when you are right underneath them.
ReplyDeleteThey do have a nice sound and, they do have a good repertoire so we get to hear different chimes. Sometimes they practise for hours ..... I think that some churches stick a record on !!!!!! I can imagine Bath Abbey bells having a lovely sound, chiming out over such a beautiful city. XXXX
DeleteThat's a really beautiful gate too! Unfortunately our bells are now 99% mechanised. They ring the times mechanically, and are very occasionally rung manually for weddings and funerals. Only ONE bell, of course.
ReplyDeleteI am SO pleased with our gate ...... we bought it at Chelsea Flower Show about five years ago and, to my suprise, it wasn't that expensive. I think it fits in as if it's always been there ! Shame that the ' human ' bell ringers are fading out there in France. XXXX
DeleteQuite soon after we'd arrived in France, there was a terrible storm. At around 2am the church bell started to ring, which I took as a sign of distress. I jumped in by trusty blue 2CV, and drove fast to the church. I found some old boy ringing the bell TO KEEP AWAY THE HAILSTONES. I returned home very wet, very annoyed, and pissed off.
DeleteI’ve never heard the bels at that time of night ! In WW11, all church bells were silenced and were only to be rung to inform of an invasion of enemy troops ..... I’m sure we would have all done as you did if we heard church bells ringing at such an hour Cro !!!! XXXX
DeleteThey sound like the bells here. I am not so near as you to the church but can hear them across the fields in the evening when they practice. It always feels like a sign of a simple life going on the same way as it has for centuries. Norwich had a church bell ringing festival a couple of years ago when all the church bells synchronised and played together. xx
ReplyDeleteIt’s lovely to hear the bells isn’t it Rachel ? It’s like being in an episode of Father Brown or Midsummer Murders !!!! I bet that bell ringing festival was wonderful when they all played together. XXXX
DeleteNot something you hear often in my neck of the woods. I would love to hear them daily.

They have a wonderful sound! My maternal grandfather used to ring the church bells in his village.
