NO REPLY ….. YES REPLY ……….

I am now in my sixth year of blogging and, I'm wondering whether to start replying to the lovely comments that you all leave. I never really gave it much thought until I realised that many of the blogs that I read reply to their comments.
I am now thinking that I have been rather rude over the past five years ….. if you can take the time to leave me a comment, then, out of courtesy, it seems right that I should reply.

SO …..  shall I answer your comments from now on ?
Life might get in the way sometimes, some comments might not need a reply and, I can't guarantee that I shall have a 100% record.

Good idea ….. bad idea ? Do you reply to comments or not …… why do you….. why don't you ?

  1. Hello Jackie,

We are definitely in the reply to comments camp. It is not particularly out of a consideration of manners, it is much more that we love to develop a dialogue with our commentators and we are fairly certain that they like the dialogue too. By replying to comments we feel that we build up a relationship with those kind enough to give a response to what we have written and, indeed, over the years, we really feel that many of our virtual friends are every bit as real as their real life counterparts. We would certainly count you amongst their number.

By commenting, we want you to know how we have enjoyed the post which you have written and, also, to give a personal response of what it has meant to us or has sparked in our minds. By receiving a reply, a connection has been made and the conversation can move to a deeper level. It is that that keeps us blogging.

    1. Hi Jane and Lance,
Well, you are my first reply on my own blog in six years !!!!!!
Even though I have never replied to comments, I have made some lovely friendships and met a few bloggers but, I think that it is nice to reply and have a 'chat' with readers…. and, as you say, it's good to build up a connection.
From now on, I shall try my hardest to reply to comments but, knowing me, it could be a little eratic !!!! ….and, I will take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support over the last six years. XXXX

  2. Hi Jackie!
I always try to reply to comments, but I do it by making a visit to their blog, because I want to see what is going on in their lives, homes and family. I don't blog as often as I should, and so when I am able to visit a friends blog, I get to go back and see all I have missed when I was away from their's. It just makes me feel more connected to them. I do have to say, that I worry that they may misunderstand and think that that is the only reason for my visit, and it isn't so. It's just that there is only so much time I can commit to the computer in my life right now, so I just do what I can when I can.
I have thought about putting the reply 'thingy' on the comment page, but then I am afraid that I wouldn't take the time to visit their own space in the www. and I would miss so much.
    much love dear friend...

  6. Hi Jackie, wow, your sixth year of blogging? That is some dedication. I hope I stick with it for as long as you. It's a nice hobby to have...
As to responding to comments. I guess some comments are worthy a response, but realistically you won't have the time to reply to everyone, unfortunately. But then again, as 'Its me' said, 'people don't come back for a second time on your post'. Hmmmm, I hope I get this dilemma one day!

  8. Replying to every comment is time consuming but I would agree entirely with Jane and Lance. It's probably the bit I enjoy most about blogging, because of the connection made and the friendships that develop. And I just enjoy the often witty banter! I try to make my writing light hearted in some respect, but there is often as much fun to be had (more?) in the comments section than in the post.

  9. I have always attempted to answer each comment I have received and it's now 6 years and I do it privately so as not to skew my comment numbers, or force someone to come back to visit to see a reply. In the beginning i even tried to track down no reply comments by going to their blog and searching for emails etc.. When I won the Where Bloggers Create thingie a few years back I had over 300 comments and YEP I answered each one. I was determined lol.... If I had never replied via email to each comment I would not have about 15 girls who I know very well as friends now and write to a lot and about 5 who I consider close friends and phone chat with often...and I have only met one face to face...
so yes respond and see what joy awaits :D

Even though I haven't answered comments, I, too, have found some really good friends through blogging and I haven't met most of them. It's really the modern equivalent of the pen friends I had years ago. XXXX

  11. Dear Jackie,
you took a question out of my mouth - I plan to blog about it too... It is a dilemma: I always answer comments and do it with all my heart - no problem there (beside of the time). But: of course I comment on other blogs too -- and love it --- but: it grows and takes a lot of time (I really think about something, have to see that I understood the other language rightly etc).
On the other hand: it gives one the feeling that the bloggers one answers to are really there - they get a personality, one gets more involved. But I really am not quite sure what to do.

  13. Hi Jackie,

Thanks so much for your lovely comment on my blog. I do leave comments but not always on all the blogs I visit. It's so hard to reply to every blog I try to visit and I hate to "leave a meaningless comment" just to say I've commented. That seems a bit disingenuous to me. I try to leave thoughtful comments on all the blogs I frequent, just not on all of them. I also enjoy receiving comments but would feel bad if people left comments just because they felt guilty about it. There is so many interesting blogs and talented people out there and not enough hours in the day to visit all of them.

Again, thanks so much for stopping by my blog and I can't wait to read your next blog post. Have a happy and joyful day!

  20. Oh dear I reckon I might be about to chuck a cat amongst the pigeons Jac, but I absolutely don't expect a reply to a comment left on a blog. I've noticed the trend over the past year & it seems to have started on the uber-type blogs where they have become the main source of income for the blogger.

I guess they have time to maintain their blogs perfectly, but this little duck needs to work full time at something far less fun, so time won't allow the reply to every comment caper. I hope it's just a passing phase.

I'm also not sure what method you are going to use to reply back to a comment. Sometimes I send an email of thanks, sometimes I go to the blog and read the latest post and then thank them in MY comment. I think it's the proper thing to do. We all have time constraints and if I'm super busy, I will mention that on my blog so it's understood if I'm not out and about in Blogland! One thing I will mention is that I'm not fond of replies right under the comments because most of us rarely come back to the blog a second time for a look. It might be a waste of time.

  31. Reply or not Reply - very good question! I have sometimes the feeling to reply, but then there is always something else happen here at our place, and as I've slowed down with posting and commenting in general, mildly spoken - what can I say. For me - It would be just another obligation, sitting in my neck, battling with the language. Apart from that I'm just a lousy writer.
For you - simply do as you feel like. Everybody loves your comments, your writing and your sense of humor!
