BACK to BACK ..........

We have had the most amazing weather for practically all of lockdown. Because of this, I wasn't going to stay in and clean, decorate or clear out my wardrobes ..... far better to be outside and tend to our garden .....

I think it was in the first week that I did my back in !!! Lower back pain that I often get when I do the first big tidy up of the garden in early Spring. I obviously use muscles that have been neglected over the Winter !

It was pretty painful so I thought my nice hot water bottle with the chunky knit cover would be very beneficial. I did place said water bottle down my knickers to get the maximum benefit of heat to the root of the problem !!!  After a couple of days of laying on the sofa with hot water bottle down my knickers, I needed to scratch my back and, when doing so, took bits of skin with it 😱 ..... yes, burnt my back !

After a couple of weeks, my back gradually improved but, I'm not sure if it was doing Joe Wicks exercises for Seniors,  scraping the moss off of the drive or doing too much too soon but, I got sciatica !!!  I have only had sciatica once about forty years ago and remember it being painful but this was relentless. I flatter myself that I am very good with pain which, thank goodness, I very rarely get, but sciatica is horrible .... it's like the worse toothache but in the length of your leg. No painkillers touch it and you just want to chop your leg off ! I endured ten days of it and then, it suddenly got better.... ish. Just a dull ache in the morning now.
Sorry, other peoples pain can be pretty boring can't it, and there are others far worse off.

I will leave you with a photograph of the rose growing over our side gate, a much cheerier subject. It's David Austin Mortimer Sackler. Roses have been amazing this year.

  1. So sorry to hear about your pain. It can be relentless as you say and nothing seems to touch it. I was prescribed very strong painkillers when I suffered a slipped disc many years ago but they messed up my digestive system big time. I found that very gentle stretching along with gentle heat helped but it was still more than 3 months before the pain receded. I really hope you feel better very soon. xxx Those roses are gorgeous. Do they have a scent to match?

    1. I know what you mean about the painkillers messing up your digestive system and they can also give you constipation .... lovely 😂 I gave up on the painkillers in the end but maybe they did do their job and took the inflammation down as it is so much better and no painkillers are needed.
We have lived in our house for over 35 years now and I used to think that, because our back garden was north facing, we couldn’t grow roses but we have some lovely ones. The one I have shown you doesn’t have much fragrance but, next to it is St. Swithuns which has a light scent. They are both in the front garden so get lots of sun. The best one we have is in the back garden called Desdemona ..... the fragrance is beautiful. I do love the old roses. Sorry for the long answer 🤣 . XXXX

    2. I got my already programmed and blanked ATM card to withdraw the maximum of $1,000 daily for a maximum of 20 days. I am so happy about this because i got mine last week and I have used it to get $20,000. Mike Fisher Hackers is giving out the card just to help the poor and needy though it is illegal but it is something nice and he is not like other scam pretending to have the blank ATM cards. And no one gets caught when using the card. get yours from Mike Fisher Hackers today! *email cyberhackingcompany@gmail.com

  2. Poor you, pain is so debilitating. Pain killers never seem to work, unless they are very powerful opiates which can be addictive. I hope things get better; take things easy!

  3. Poor you, am hoping the sciatica is soon history, have had it so feel your pain Jackie. Never thought to put the hot water bottle down my knickers for lower back pain - good idea but praying my on and off pain in those nether regions stays away, have enough to deal with in the right shoulder with a severe rotator cuff tear. . . . . surgery some day post-pandemic!!!
    Aging is not funny!
Beautiful roses - here we're having far too much rain - 2" yesterday - more coming today. My blooms are saturated.
Enjoy the weekend - which is now just the sam as the week, right!
Stay safe and take it easy.
    Hugs - Mary
P.S. Did you knit the HWB covers? I love them. If you did, do you have a pattern please?

  4. Sciatica so much better now Mary & no painkillers needed anymore ( although, they didn’t do much ! ) not advisable to put the hot water bottle down your knickers !!!!! You’ll burn your back like I did !!! .... and, no, ageing is not funny ! Hope it won’t be long before you can sort your shoulder out but I guess that’s up in the air at the moment ? I bought the hot water bottle with cover so I’m afraid I can’t help you with a pattern ! So sorry.
Roses have been beautiful this year .... could be that we had quite a lot of rain early in the year and are now getting lots and lots of sunshine ..... also, because of lockdown, there is less pollution.
Look after yourselves both of you, XXXX

  6. Oh, Jackie! What a disaster!! Painful things really do come out of the blue, and painkillers in the main really don't do anything for the worst causes. I'm also happy to hear you've turned a corner ... Your rose gate is stunning, too!! xx

  7. Oh dear you have had a run haven't you. Glad to hear you are better. I tried roses here but fighting the aphids made it miserable. I gave them all to a friend, and don't know however they did in the end? Stay safe and be careful..Those bones of ours just aren't the same as they were.

    1. Well Z, I do feel bad moaning about it as many are far worse off than me . We do get aphids a bit and black spot but I spray them and try to keep it to a minimum. The roses are lovely this year , the best they’ve ever been I think. We had a lot of rain early in the year and now, lots of sun. Also, maybe the lack of pollution due to the virus has helped ? Who knows !! I think that is what us oldies have to remember ..... we are older and can’t do what we did in our 30’s and 40’s... I tend to forget that ! Look after yourself Z. XXXX

    1. Hi Elizabeth,
I am now wondering if it was the gardening that did it or the exercises I was doing ! I’m now giving up the exercises 🤣 I was talking to a friend the other day and she said she had sciatica when pregnant .... that must have been a nightmare for you. I think mine is improving and I managed some light gardening today. Must be careful though. We have had the most glorious weather virtually all through lockdown. I’ll be over to see you .... the back stopped me looking at blogs for a while. Look after yourselves. XXXX

  10. Dear Jackie, I ABSOLUTELY feel with you: sciatica is (one of) the most horrible pains - my big garden gave it to me twice - uff, there a balcony in Berlin is better - and I found out that there might be a connection with anger (before garden work) to get it (though it might be pure mechanical too). Hope you are better soon! Britta xxx

    1. Hi Britta and many thanks for your best wishes. It’s so much better now thank goodness .... I am just in from the garden after doing some ‘ light ‘ gardening ! I wouldn’t think my sciatica was associated with anger as I very rarely get angry ! Hope you are well and have been able to see those wonderful triplets. XXXX
