A ROSE IS A ROSE IS A ROSE ………. OR A CLEMATIS !!!! ……….

Roses seem to be especially good this year. The above is our David Austin ' St. Swithun' . The flowers are HUGE and there are so many this year that the whole plant is weighed down by them !! Each bloom has hundreds of pale pink petals and have that traditional old rose perfume of Myrrh and, after the first major flush of flowers in May/June, it flowers continually until October.

I picked these to bring indoors with some alchemilla mollis.

We planted this creamy rambler years ago and one on the other side of the garden and they are both smothered in flowers.

We planted this one to tumble over our rusty arch about three years ago and I've lost the label so I don't know it's name. Not very Monty Don of me !!!! For non UK readers, Monty Don is a gardener on UK TV !!

….. and, finally, because they are out, are these clematis. They only grow between 1 and 2 feet and bloom from May to September. The purple one is called 'Bijou' and the pink one, 'Filigree'.

What a blooming lovely late Spring we're having !!!!

All photos by me !!

  2. Gorgeous, Jackie! Not much is in bloom here yet. And I never heard about tiny clematis - dwarf ones (5') yes, but tiny ones that you can put in pots, no. I want one now!
(Funny you mentioned about not knowing the name of that rose - I am getting a post ready about my gardening notebook - I'm trying to keep everything straight, but since I was/am a haphazard gardener, we shall see! Now to google Monty Don) xo

    1. They are good this year aren't they Carol ? I only planted those clematis about two months ago and they are covered in flowers….. I'm sure that you will find them.
I've tried to keep the labels when I plant anything but, somehow, some have got lost !!!! I'm a pretty haphazard gardener too !!
Monty Don is lovely and his dog Nigel follows him around throughout the programme . XXXX

    2. I'll definitely look for those clematis. And oh, btw, I went back to work to pick up some Diamond Frost (right after you posted about it) and it was all gone! *sobs*

    3. Oh Carol …. that's a shame about the 'Diamond Frost'. If you lived near me I'd give you some !! Do you think any other nursery near you might have some ? If not, there's always next year !! XXXX

    4. Oh thank you, J - I do wish I could just pop in and get some from you! xo

I looked at one other place and it was really expensive (and although DF is gorgeous, for that same price I'd rather buy a perennial, you know?) - but I have one more place to check. Fingers crossed!

  3. Roses look at me and run. I've never had success with them. There is a beautiful yellow rose named after the wife of a distinguished ancestor, it's called 'Lady Banks', which I would love to grow, but I fear that like all others it would simply die. Yours is fabulous.

    1. If we can grow them in a North facing garden Cro, I'm sure that you could ……. You should try a rambler if you've got room. We have 'Rambling Rector' or it could be 'Seagull' which grows amongst the trees and looks after itself. You should try one …. I'll show some photographs of mine when it flowers. I shall look up 'Lady Banks' now !! XXXX

    2. 'Lady Banks' is a yellow version of our 'Rambling Rector' ….. see if you can get one and try it. If it dies, I'll reimburse you !!!! XXXX

    3. My late father had one, and used to dig it up every time we moved house..... it lived through the abuse for at least 14 years.

    1. Actually Donna, our north facing back garden isn't the best for roses. The pink 'St Swithun' is in the front garden which faces south so does well as it gets the sun, but I think we are just lucky with the ones in the back { nothing to do with my gardening skills !! } Some varieties are black spot resistant so maybe you could have a go with one of those. 6. Lovely photo's of your garden Jackie! That pink David Austen rose looks spectacular! Somehow the David Austen roses never do well in my garden. The ones by the cheap supermarkets do! ;-) A beautiful bouquet too. Just the way I like it too.

    Have a good week!

    1. I'm sure that the Supermarket roses are just as good as the David Austin ones Madelief !! I bought the 'St. Swithun' one for my husband on his birthday as his birthday is on St. Swithuns day. It's many years old now but seems to get better every year. I think it's just in the right position. Have a lovely week too Madelief and I hope the sun shines for you. XXXX

  20. What a gorgeous rose that is Jackie! How I wish he would love my garden. I had planted about 10 David Austin roses here about 3 or 4 years ago, and I have lost every one of them through the winters here. They made it through the first winter and then the next got all but two. This past winter took them finally and put them out of their misery. I say, "Not very Monty Don of me either" There's no rose as beautiful as a David Austin!
The vase of roses in the window looks like a scene out of my favorite Masterpiece Classic movie (whatever it be) I love them all))
I am one forlorn woman over here across the pond, because my daughter just got back from a 10 day trip to your beautiful country and now my best friend and her husband are there for 2 weeks. At least I get to feed and care for her chickens while they are gone, which will mean a lovely gift from England I'm sure :))))
much love from sad ol' me!

    1. Hi June,
It's so sad that you lost your David Austin roses BUT …….. your garden is SO amazing and you have roses by the bucket full and my garden will never be as wonderful as yours. I have never known anyone with so many peonies !!!!!
I do hope that your daughter and your best friend had a wonderful time here and I'm sure that they will share all of their experiences with you.
Don't be sad ……. I think that you have a lovely life where you are.
      Lots of love. XXXX

  23. Dear Jackie,
the roses are absolutely lovely! (and make me sigh for the 146 roses, mostly 'old' ones, I had in my garden in Hildesheim).
On my coming back from NY and then Crete, I found on my Berlin balcony still flowering roses and clematis (though most of them had used the time to 'rise and shine' when I was away :-)

    1. Hi Britta,
Welcome back from your travels …… NY and Crete ….. How wonderful.
Our son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren are in Berlin at the moment. They love it there and, I think that I have told you, our son spent the last year of his degree in Magdeburg and visited Berlin often so he knows it very well. The weather seems a bit wet but, us Brits are used to that and I'm sure that it won't spoil their holiday.
Lovely to have you back in Blogland. XXXX
