I met some friends at the pub today for lunch ..... a nice light salad, a small glass of wine and a girly chat .....
Around about 3.00p.m., the heavens opened and, what we have all been waiting for happened. It came down in stair rods and went on & on & on and is still going on and it's now 6.30 p.m.
We pretty much had to wade through the car park to our cars ..... the water was up to our calves ..... my shoes are in the tumble drier as we speak !!! But, with the lovely, long awaited rain came devastation .....
My hydrangeas have been battered to within an inch of their lives !!! Hopefully, they will perk up when the sun comes out again !
Oh, and we have now been told by Thames Water { our water supplier } that a hosepipe ban will begin on the 24th of August !!!!
XXXX
It's been like that around here today. Deluge in one place and then two miles up the road, dry! We have had big enough gaps between the downpours for it to get away and the drains recover but I suspect there will be a bit of flash flooding. It was nice to feel the freshness and the coolness of the rain. I hope your shoes are alright! x
ReplyDeleteI was so pleased to see the rain ...... I don't think more is forecast so I'm sure that the hosepipe ban will stay in place ! I was wearing my white trainers so they are used to being washed ! They will be fine.... they probably welcomed getting wet π€£ XXXX
DeleteWe don't have a hosepipe ban here, AW have plenty of water.
DeleteSomeone said that Thames Water have plenty of water and yet we are still having a hosepipe ban ..... I find that I don't know who to believe nowadays ? XXXX
DeleteYour poor shoes... and those hydrangeas. We are expecting rain tomorrow. Hope it is not as bad as yours!!! XXX
ReplyDeleteShoes are fine JayCee .... I was wearing my white trainers which often go in the washing machine .... they were probably in need of a wash ! The rain was most welcome ..... I've never known our garden soil to be like dust before ! Hope you don't get washed away tomorrow ! XXXX
DeleteI would enjoy the sounds of a good downpour. We haven't had one this year like that.
ReplyDeleteIt was lovely ..... I loved seeing it pour and pour and didn't want it to stop !!! The night before, it rained a little and I went and stood in it !!! I shall probably be moaning soon that the sun hasn't shown its face ..... typical ..... I'm British π€£. XXXX
DeleteRain water rising to your calf is quite something. Nothing seems to come in moderation these days. We all need the rain. Your hydrangea got very saturated...hopefully it will revive in the sunshine.
ReplyDeleteIt really was Susan but so needed ..... everyone was so happy to see it ! I think all of my hydrangeas have had it ..... many of the stems that carry the flowers are broken so, will have to wait until next year now ! XXXX
DeleteMy oldest has just sold his house in Old Harlow, so it hope it's not flooded there too. I could just picture the new owners arriving and saying "STOP THAT CHEQUE". They were taking possession yesterday!
ReplyDeleteHopefully, the rain didn't enter his property. I guess it just depends where ones house is built. Thankfully, we don't seem to get any water in the house { I might regret saying that !!! } but I'm sure many do, unfortunately. Do you know if Brighton had a downpour ? XXXX
DeleteI hear there was no flooding in Old Harlow; as for Brighton I really don't know.
DeleteI'm sure all's well Cro ...... we haven't had anymore rain and, my sister lives in Horsham and I don't think they had as much as us. XXXX
DeleteIf only the heavy rainfall had happened in the parts of the world that were burned to the ground in terrible bushfires.
ReplyDeleteYes Hels ..... if only. It's so sad that those who need it the most never get it. I was listening to an Australian older man yesterday on social media, who often has a rant { I think he lives in the UK } He said that Northern Australia get lots of rain and flooding but it all runs into the sea. If they would only save it and pipe it to the centre of the country it would be so helpful and wouldn't cost a lot. I know this wouldn't help countries that don't have any rain but it could help many. XXXX
DeleteComing down in stair rods! That's a new expression for me, Jackie, but it perfectly describes your downpour and is always time for celebration! It's just a pity that Mother Nature's off-button doesn't seem to work so well these days and biblical deluges often result. Anyway, I hope the brown landscapes of poor England green up again. I saw pics of Hampstead Heath, I think it was, and it looked like Australia in the summer!!
ReplyDeleteHaha .... an old English saying is coming down in stair rods !!!! It has been unbelievably hot here Pip ...... the downpour was so welcome and the gardens have perked up but, there doesn't seem to be anymore rain forecast in the near future so, I think we can forget about the garden for this year unfortunately. I think we are going to have to get used to this sort of weather. XXXX

ReplyDeleteI'm sure that your weather mirrors ours Ria as we seem to have very similar weather. I do love the warm weather but, we really need more rain don't we ? The gym seems a good place to be if it's got air con ! Keep well .... and fit π€£ XXXX
DeleteI'm dragging out my wellies as rain is on the way! Crazy summer here also with such heat and little rain. The weeds are literally 4 feet tall in the back corner of the garden and the mosquitoes so thick working there is murder for me, so sending Bob there to pull them out today - apparently he's not so tasty!
ReplyDeleteHope your lovely hydrangeas enjoy their long awaited drink Jackie!
Crazy summer here too Mary ...... seems everyone is experiencing extremes of weather. My hydrangeas look very sad and I don't think there is any coming back this year ! Oh well .... such is gardening. I'm about to watch Monty Don on Gardeners World .... I'll see how his hydrangeas are doing π€£ XXXX
