PAST TIMES ..........

Do you have a fascination for a particular period of history?

I am rather partial to Georgian architecture and have owned a 17th century cottage and now live in a late Victorian house but, I am LOVING these photographs taken in the Kensington area of London in 1906 /1907 by Edward Linley Sambourne.
When these photographs were taken, Linley Sambourne was chief cartoonist at Punch magazine. For forty years, he had been an illustrator and cartoonist ...... BUT,  he was also an enthusiastic amateur photographer. He used photography  to aid his art and took thousands of photographs of his family, his friend's and professional models and his wife, Marion, complained that his photographic hobby had become his obsession !

I love this one ..... I have the boots and a jacket and skirt very similar to this that I wear now !

Love her shoes and her purse around her neck .....

I also have a skirt like this ..... these photographs are street style 1900's and, maybe without the hats, wouldn't look out of place today.

It seems that, the older you got, the longer your skirts got !!

He even took street style photographs in Paris !!

Linley Sambourne's descendant's include his great-grandson the Earl of Snowdon and great-great-grandson Viscount Linley.
When you consider that this was a time when photography was still new and most photographs were very formal, Edward Linley Sambourne really captured Edwardians going about their daily lives ..... and, if you Google him, you will see that he captured an awful lot more, if you get my drift  !!!

What is your favourite period in history ?

P.S : I am publishing this post at 2.00 a.m. as I'm watching Johanna Konta at the U.S Open, Flushing Meadows !!!!!!!

  1. Very elegant; especially the 'school girls'.

I'm not sure what my favourite historical period would be; Elizabethan, Georgian, Queen Anne, but those are mostly for the architecture.

  2. Not sure what my favorite period would be . . .
I enjoyed your post . . . and I could see glimpses of you in the boots and skirts . . . that is of course, in the brief times I have seen you include "snaps" of yourself.
Whenever those "snaps" have been . . . they have left me when an endearing image of your style and pizazz . . . individuality at its best . . .

  3. Great photographs! The wonderful schoolgirl photographs quite took me back to my school days (not quite Edwardian days!) we had to wear straw boaters for summer, navy blue felt hat for winter, 120 denier stockings in a vile pinky/beige colour with flat lace-up shoes, regulation style of course. I really wouldn't mind some of those skirts.

    1. Hi Felicity ...... aren't the schoolgirl photographs great ? I love the way that he has caught them just being schoolgirls ..... something that we don't see very often from that period as everyone was so stiff and formal when they had their photo taken, weren't they ? Our winter senior school uniform was similar and we had funny little navy corduroy berets that we had to wear. XXXX

  4. I have seen a programme on the tv about this gentleman. Viscount Linley was being interviewed in his ancestors home which was stuffed full of photographs and all manner of Victoriana - I seem to remember that he had a copper bath and that his home is possibly open to the public. The photos seem very modern to me catching the girls and ladies as they are naturally with no posing. My favourite era would have to be the thirties and forties particularly the Hollywood fashion of that period.

    1. You are right on all counts Elaine. I must go and visit his house as it's one that I seem to have missed. There is, as well as a conventional tour, an actor-led costumed tour based on his wife Marion's diaries .... right up my alley !!!
.... and, I love the way he caught everyone unawares ..... much more of an insight into the period. I think that I love little pieces of all periods of history although I don't think that I would actually like to have lived in them .... I like my modern comforts too much !!!! XXXX

  7. My interest in history begins a bit before the first World War and continues to the present. I don't know why it starts when it does. Perhaps the people become more real to me then.

  10. Here I am at last Jackie. Yes, I love these Edwardian fashions, everything about these photos, the boots, the skirts, the jackets and each outfit finished off with a hat! Thank you for showing them, I am excited for winter! I don't know about my favourite period in history but the only time I ever got excited about fashion and textiles was in the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul where I was so excited I couldn't keep still or my place in line or behave with any decorum as I walked around the fabulous textiles and drawings. They must surely be a must for all fashion students. If you haven't been, you must go one day!

    1. Hi Rachel ...... you obviously like the same fashion as I do .... and, I love Autumn and Winter fashion most of all.
The fashion and textiles in Topkapi Palace sound amazing .... something that I would very much love to see ... I've seen the film Topkapi.... does that count for anything !!!!
Behaving with any sense of decorum seems to matter very little the older I get !! XXXX

  11. They are fantastic photographs, the detail and the innocence is captured so well. I have lots of periods in history that I love and am interested with. I've always been fascinated with the late Victorian and Edwardian era, a bit of Georgian and of course my ultimate fix, Plantaganet and Tudor, especially Tudor. All those flowing gowns and furs and jewels and brooding medieval castles! Great post as always, thank you, Jane x

I think that I could pick various parts of each period of history that interests me but am grateful that I live in the here and now !!!! XXXX

  14. Oh my dear Jackie!!! How I love this post! I know I would have been darling in the 1920's :))) so that's the era that I am most drawn to. I don't think I could have done the bustles and corsets of the earlier eras...I'm a kind of let it all hang out girl. I went over and over every picture you shared and couldn't believe how much I missed about the outfits the first time through. You mentioned the little purse around the girls neck and yet I didn't see it until I went back through. If I had a favorite photo though, it would have to be the one of the girl with the giant bow on her hat. I don't think I could pull off that look today without my children putting me up for adoption (or maybe even putting me to sleep :)
    Much love from me...

Thank you dear Jackie for your lovely comment on my last post! Means so much!

    1. Hello June ....... there were many more photographs and many of the girls had their purses hanging round their necks ..... it was obviously the style in 1906 !!!! I love their style ... the shoes, the little boots, the skirts and jackets ... I reckon I was around then as I really love the look !!! .... not sure about the hats though .... hats just got bigger and bigger in Edwardian times !!
Hoping everything is now on an even keel June .... sending much love from the UK. XXX

  15. "His wife, Marion, complained that his photographic hobby had become his obsession!" So what's new? Nowadays photography is virtually obligatory and everywhere you go there are hundreds of cameras snapping away!

I do love all those jackets and skirts - and the footwear too. My favourite period in history? Goodness, that's hard to say. Actually I rather like the 1960s, when I was growing up and there was an amazing atmosphere of new ideas and new freedoms and big hopes for the future - and some wonderful fashions as well!

    1. You are so right about the '60's Nick and, I think that the 70's were quite influential in fashion too...... I was a teenager in the 1960's and spent a lot of my time in Biba in the 70's so both were a great era for me. XXXX

You are ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL AND HAVE MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD !!!

  18. What beautiful pictures, Jackie! I also love the school girls, but I don't think they were very happy to wear garters, as they did in those days!
As a little girl I use to draw princesses and I wished I could live in princesses' era, until my mum put me off saying that princesses could not bath or shower whenever they pleased.
I do not have a particular historical period, but I did like the mini, midi, maxi and hot pants fashion; all thoroughly worn with lace up boots!
    Greetings Maria x

    1. Hi Maria ..... hope that you are well.
aren't the photographs brilliant .... but, you are right about some of the things that they had to wear .... not very comfortable !! I am looking at these images through rose coloured glasses I think !!!!
... and, I think that your Mum was right ..... I don't think that it's that good, being a princess even in 2016 !
