ARE YOU BENDY ?!! ……….

I like to think that, at the age of 64 { …. only just 64 !! } I'm still quite bendy !

The other night, at a friend's house, we were remembering how we used to jump up off of the floor, without a thought.

We then idly wondered if we could still do it ….. our friend's husband tried but couldn't do it { ….. and he is one of the fittest men we know, who cycles a zillion miles every weekend ! } My husband didn't even give it a go …… our friend's wife tried and ….. she did it !
Well, that meant that I HAD to do it.  I placed my feet right behind me as my friend had done and started to push up when ….. POP ….. something snapped behind my knee !!!! There was a great deal of pain and much ' you should have warmed up first ' being mumbled !
Obviously, if I'd warmed up first and I hadn't torn something, I would have done it !!!!

Can you get off of the floor without using your hands or knees ? ….. and …..

BE WARNED !!

WARM UP FIRST !!

  1. Great photos....
Me bendy !!!! No I couldn't even sit crossed legged on the floor when I was at infant school... Remember those days when schools had assembly every morning and we all sat crossed legged on the parquet floors in our appropriate class place in neat lines, Later when I progressed to senior school. I was the one who could never shin up the rope in gym class. but I was a 5ft. fast center player in netball. can't be good at everything. I hope the knee pop is nothing serious.

    1. Hi Barbara,
No, we can't all be good at everything. I don't think that it's all about fitness either ….. our friend is so fit and couldn't do it. That's probably because his tendons are very taut !! XXXX

  2. I had a go on the children's trampoline a few years ago and it felt so wrong in my body! I didn't jump very much but my head and stomach felt as though they were rattling around! Oh the joys of ageing! I hope your knees's ok!

    1. Hi Jess,
Oh, isn't aging horrible. I have always been a good swimmer but, last year on holiday, when I dived underwater I was all dizzy when I came up to the surface !!!! After a bit of hobbling my knee was OK thanks. XXXX

  3. No, I can't. My daughter adopted a dog, who is no longer with us. When my daughter went away to high school and college, the dog became my buddy. When I got down on my knees to sort the laundry, I'd finish and say, Emma, help Mama. She'd run over and I'd lean on her while I got on my feet. She was great. I miss her. I'm so sorry you're injured.

    Love,
    Janie

  4. Oh Janie ….. what a lovely dog Emma was. What do you do now when you end up on the floor ?!! XXXX

  5. I often sit with my legs underneath me or crossed high up above me knee. I remember thinking that once I cannot do that, I am officially 'old'. (I'll be 56 this year)
Wait a minute - let's see if I can jump.
Yep, but I didn't get too far! (Glad to read that your knee is doing better xox)
I cannot run very well, anymore. I try to disparage runners/joggers but my BFF kindly pointed out to me it was because I'm envious, and she was right.

  8. After I read this I tried a few things that used to be able to do - and found that I can't do any of them.
    1. I used to be able to bend my thumb down to touch my wrist.
    2. I used to be able to put one arm over my should, the other behind my back and clasp my fingers.
    3. I used to be able to touch my nose with my tongue.
and no I can't get up off the floor from a cross-legged position

    I'm rubbish.

Hope the knee isn't giving you too much gip. My husbands knees are practically hanging off.
Oh the joys of getting old!

    1. Oh Elaine …… don't worry ….. we're all in the same boat. It's just so annoying when you know that you used to be able to do it. I can still do the arm over the shoulder thing and touch my fingers and can just about still touch my nose with my tongue but I just tried the thumb to wrist { which I used to be able to do } and what do you know ? I couldn't do it !! Bugger !! I do think that some of these things have something to do with your frame though as people who are younger and fitter sometimes can't do some of these things …. that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it !! My knee was OK after a few days thanks so I didn't do too much damage thank goodness ! XXXX

  12. My husband used to always grumble about how "bendy" I am. I can't just bend down and touch my toes but I can sit on the floor and put my foot up to my shoulder .. I am that kind of bendy.
I never could touch my nose with my tongue. I am a loser. lol

    1. I think that we are all bendy in different ways …. I can touch my toes easily but I don't think that I can put my foot on my shoulder ….. hang on a minute, I'll have a go …. maybe not. Perhaps I'll try next week !! Hope you are well and you haven't had too much snow. XXXX

  13. Ohh no!! Wretched 'pop'!! I hope you are OK. We had similar at New Year; trying to win at the cereal box game I did myself a mischief trying to lunge low. Even after all that yoga. I guess it's a lesson! We should not try to show off in front of friends! Haha! Lou x

    1. Oh Lou ……. I did exactly the same thing with the cereal box game one New Years Eve !!!! Did something to my leg which took months to heal !!!! ….. and, I said the same thing about this little incident …. note to self…. no more showing off !!!! I definitely heard a 'pop' but it couldn't have been much as it's fine now !! Thanks for caring though ! XXXX

  16. BENDING????? I've discovered in my early life that I have no talent for being a "contortionist" -ha!
Then - during the antique business, house restoration, garden work, had to bend permanently, lifting up heavy stones, tables, boxes etc...until I've insured my back seriously several years ago, making just a wrong move/bend. No London fairs any longer, no packing, no Van loading, my back said: enough is enough!
Now - being a decade older than you, dear Jackie, I'm happy to be still able to touch the floor with my fingers when standing upright - bending forward.
Be carefully, and - quite right - warm up before any extrem :) :) exercises, or have a whiskey or two before.....:) I emphasize with you and hope that you recover quickly, being fit and ready for the next "Bend"!
    Warmest greetings, karin

    1. I think that you are doing very well Karin …… some very young people can't touch their toes.
…. and, as we get older, we really need to slow down just a little …. we do forget that we can't do everything that we could do when we were 20.
I must stop trying to do these things !!!! Lots of love. XXXX

    2. Yes! Please! Don't make the same mistakes I've done!!!! No matter what your brain is saying - when your body is saying NO! - listen to it. Everything has its "time" in our lives.
And - quite honestly - as long as we can get out of bed every morning, as long as we can reach a glass of "whatsoever", as long as we can reach the TV remoter.....what else do we need!
      Love your readers comments!!!
As usual - your posts are very uplifting - smiling - laughing!

  19. Oh dear Jackie, that was a misfortune - hope you are alright again? Agility, flexibility, err: frilly-ty (see: hahaha, I followed your discussion with Rachel - and: your blog was Not one of those I thought of) are important when getting older. Stretching, yoga - the whole lot... I injured my knee when handling those lots and lots of locks on our narrow-boat-trip last year (the big ones with the high doors, not the small ones over the canal) - although I was very steeled by years of weight-training. But: everything has two sides, and something very romantic evolved from it :-)

  20. Hi dear Britta,
    We had a boat on the canals in France and it is very hard work …. very easy to do some damage to your body !! …. and, I know that you weren't talking about my blog as a frilly blog { even though it is !!!! haha }
As we get older, I think that we have to be a bit careful when we exert ourselves and remember that we're not 20 anymore !!!! XXXX

    1. But even with 22 we can do it :-) , filled with the wisdom of knowing when to bend - and when not to. That is, in my eyes, a beautiful and useful character trait we earn by adding two & mumble, mumble years XXX
