SHABBY CHIC - NESS ........

Yes, yes, I know that Shabby Chic is thought of as 'old hat' and rather passe but, I still love it, so call me old fashioned !!

There is an article about Rachel Ashwell in this month's U.K. Country Living so, maybe I am still on trend !! As you all probably know, Rachel Ashwell IS Shabby Chic. She finds wonderful, discarded treasures in flea-markets and mixes them with faded floral fabrics and produces a beautiful romantic look in every room in the house.
If you want to see THE most wonderful home from a fellow blogger, then go over and see Maria @ Dreamy Whites . Her home is absolutely beautiful and she will give you inspiration by the bucketload !! Maria only started blogging a few months ago and she has got nearly 1500 followers. She has obviously got something very special.

I think that the beauty of this look is that it doesn't have to be expensive. An old wooden table sanded down and distressed could give you a look like this one.

An old shelf displaying some of your favourite things looks wonderful.

I have seen this image all over blogland and it's one of my favourites.

You can even do shabby chic in the garden.

How's this for a chandelier ? I think that it is the Vivienne Westwood of chandeliers or I could imagine it in Miss Havisham's house.

Oooop's, I told you it was my favourite !! So good, I showed it twice !!!!

Well, I think that a nice sit down in this cosy, romantic spot , lit by the glow of the fire is called for. After my exertions this month, I think that I'm owed that much.
Thanks to everyone who has popped in to see me this week and to all of my new followers. You are all stars !
Jackie

  2. I still love shabby chic rooms, nothing wrong with being old fashioned about things we love.
YOU always do the best job with your posts.
    These images are just lovely.
    Please keep inspiring us.

  3. Only you could put the chic in shabby chic. Everything you do is just so stylish. I hope that you are feeling so much better after your battle with the oysters and tumble.

#6 now resides in the basement. She got a bit of a makeover and was left with no space for her. So off she went! We are actually planning on making a playroom for the kids in the basement. She will be part of the dress up area for the bitty one.

Don't forget your #6! You know I won't let ya!

  8. I do love that vintage style and ´brocante´ look as well. All things with a nice patina have that special touch which gives a space so much charm. Especially the whites are so beautiful and fresh.
    Great pictures!! :D
Happy weekend to you and best regards,

  11. Hello Jackie
I love the shabby look, even if it's not chic, even if it's not bang-on-trend anymore!
The pictures you selected are a feast for my eyes..don't even get me started on Maria@Dreamy whites. she's not only has style, she's got a heart of gold and that's why so many people love her.
but talking about style.. there's nothing to teach you about it ! you've got plenty.
    Have a lovely weekend

  12. Jackie,
In our shiny modern world, we need things that bear the marks of time, connect us to the past, and speak of simplicity. Shabby chic-ness captures the essence of all of these desires. I don't think our needs will change as technology evolves, except to maybe grow even stronger. What a beautiful post-- so many images to make me swoon! I am feeling the urge to get out my sewing machine and see what it can do. Happy Friday!
    xo,

  14. that chandelier has me thinking...I have an old ugly "builder" chandelier in my dining room that I haven't gotten around to replacing...maybe I should drape some pearls and see what I can come up with.

  15. Well, Jacqueline, I'm a big shabby chic fan too so we can both be off-trend together. I like the homeliness of it (though I'm told one must not use 'homely' in the US as it means 'ugly' there). But I like it not too shabby, so distressed is a step too far for me, unless it's something my children have distressed naturally. But ruffles and small floral prints and painted furniture: a big tick tick tick to all of that.

Here's a thought for you - how about a shabby chic top-hat? I'd like to make you employee of the month for your prodigious jar-filling and the shabby chic top-hat would look great on the podium. I also wish you were the British ambassadress to Ireland and am holding talks with the Queen to arrange that. I hope you don't mind.

I'm a die hard shabby chicer too. The shabby comforts of my little home ease my troubles, that's what they do.

Since the wedding invitations went out, I feel like I'm on a roller coaster going down fast, so we're puttin are arms up high and enjoying the ride.

  35. Hi Jackie,
I hope you are behaving yourself this week and not taking any tumbles! I was thinking of you this week and hoping it has been a smooth week and that you stayed in one place (by fire with a good drink and book maybe). I also was thinking that this vintage look is so popular, I always think just blog about vintage and ivory and you have a zillion followers in no time (talking to myself here). It does have a huge appeal to women, so soothing and romantic. I think and we all need that these days. Lovely post and I enjoyed studying each photo. I would like to have this look in a small studio, just a feminine hideaway. I can't imagine my husband wanting this soit would have to be a girl room. Hope the weather is warming up there. it is getting warmer here and trees are all blooming but it is taking its time (back and forth). Long comment.....it is a boring Friday night - lol! So nice to catch up with you and take more time with one of my favorite bloggers. Much love XO

  41. Hey jackie
Well I'm still a fan of shabby chic.. really I think it is a timeless style.. and 'plays' well with others.. You know that first photo is from one of my favourite articles from Australian Country Style magazine.. I have had a draft post on this guys house languishing forever... he has the most amazing collections....and Rachel Ashwell.well she has the touch doesn't she? I just stole a 2005 mag from the drs surgery this week as it had an article of her house.... Lovely stuff... long live Shabby chic.. xxx Julie

  42. Oh, I LOVE Shabby Chic....these are all gorgeous, great selection :)

I definitely couldn't do all white in my home, I need a bit of colour, but I love all the shabby chic furniture, all of it!! Of Special Interest has the most GORGEOUS cream cupboards in its windows at the moment....not shabby chic as such I know, but lovely and creamy!

Thanks for the birthday wishes Jackie, I had the loveliest birthday for a few years I think....helped probably by the gorgeous weather - isn't it lovely?!

I spent the whole afternoon in Highgate Woods with my son....not thinking "I've got to leave in 10 mins to get to Sainsburys etc etc"....just totally enjoyed it....it was perfect. Plus it's just the nicest place to be, sometimes walking through the actual woods is like being in a huge green cathedral, it is so calming.

And the ballet was lovely, we had an early dinner in Covent Garden beforehand....lovely seeing all the "workers" standing outside the pubs everywhere (I remember those days!), it was so busy....and then we loved the ballet, it was the London Childrens Ballet....wonderful. I did laugh though cos my daughter commented there were all awful lot of posh women there!!! And there were actually, lots of "ballet Mums"!! I did giggle! And there was someone snoring behind us too!

Anyway, tonight we are off to a really good friend's 40th....they have an amazing house in Muswell Hill, a great house for a party and they do know how to throw a good party. They are having a band - but it's a band that the guests can join in with....am gargling and practising my scales as I type LOL!!!! The birthday boy's brother is a chef at Zafferano over in Knightsbridge and he is doing the catering tonight....am really looking forward to it :)

Hope you have recovered from your tumble and that everything has healed.

    Enjoy the lovely weather! xoxo

  47. wow I'm pooped!!! all that scrolling down to get to this little white box! Jackie, what beautiful choices..That pearl chandelier!!! so far, it is the best I've seen. The shabby look has been around for awhile and does not show any indication of going away. I think it will last as long as the stuff is the real deal...and was gorgeous and quality to begin with...Cheap furniture painted white and then scraped away doesn't quite cut it...The patina of that old paint, layered and cracked cannot really be copied...only time can make it awesome. Some excellent redone stufff out there, but nothing like the "real deal" I see Rachel Ashwell many times at the Flea Markets here..She has even bought from me...One time, now don't tell a soul, I followed her for awhile at The Long Beach Flea Market. It was very interesting to hear her comments, see what she bought etc. etc. Oh dear Jackie! I shouldn't have had that midafternoon expresso..stop me!!

Spot on examples of this incredible style/trend....you are right - there are so many affordable ways of making it real and practical - it just takes a little imagination and elbow grease...there is something very comforting about the look of these rooms and the objects in them..as if they were reaching out to embrace the people inhabiting or even just visiting these spaces - warm and inviting and giving a feeling of security...lovely, Jackie, lovely...oxo

  101. Jackie,
I'm right there with you. I still like a little shabby chic mixed in here and there.

Thanks for your faithful visiting and little notes you leave. You are so sweet. Enjoy the weekend. Rita

  106. My goodness, Jackie: I just wanted to applaud you on your excellent taste in assembling such dream-come-true photos, with so much white (Photo 4 is my own personal dream-come-true favorite -- wow!), but there are already 110 comments, so I'm not sure you'll see comment 111! Still, excellent taste must be praised, so I'm writing anyway.
Wonderful being back on your blog!!
    XO
    Michael

PS: Would love to hear how your son and daughter-in-law found Seattle / Portland!
